What good is having the tools to create content and express oneself if this content cannot then be shared and interacted with? To this end we have partnered with television networks and cellphone-based social media sites to develop our youth media network so that young people can share the content they have produced, express their opinions about each other’s work and engage in debate about the issues they raise.
South African community TV stations (Cape TV, Tshwane TV, 1KZN & Bay TV), as well as national pay channels DStv and Top TV, broadcast Vuselela’s twice- weekly ‘Bona Retsang’ youth news and opinion programme.
The best cellphone video clips and community journalism stories are broadcast daily on SABC1, SA’s national broadcaster, as part of ‘Geleza Nathi’, a popular youth ‘edutainment’ series.
Mxit has over 10-million active users in SA. It is the biggest social network in Africa, accessed largely via cell phones. Through our Mxit ap “Mobischool” Vuselela uploads citizen journalism clips weekly.
